What is the role of a Christian in politics? (NEW VIDEO)

  • Can a Christ-Follower vote Democrat?
  • Is it OK to vote strictly based on one issue?
  • What happens AFTER the election?
  • Why has “social justice” become such a hot topic in the church?
  • Liberal vs. Conservative?

Church and Politics is often a messy collision, but one that cannot be ignored. Dr. Joel Hunter, Senior Pastor at Northland in Orlando, FL, sat down with the Catalyst Road Trip Team and responded to several very difficult questions. We didn’t think we would get a chance to meet with Dr. Hunter given his demanding schedule and international influence (Dr. Hunter had a call with Obama shortly after we left) but we were given a chance to meet with him in his office during our final days on the Catalyst Road Trip through Florida.

Let’s briefly set the stage - who is Dr. Joel Hunter? Senior Pastor of a church recently voted one of the Top 50 Most Influential Churches, named by Grist Magazine “as one of the top 15 religious environmental leaders in the world, along with the Pope and the Dali Lama,” and recent author of A New Kind of Conservative, Dr. Joel Hunter is a powerfully relevant voice in politics, in the church, AND in the arena of social justice. His passion and convictions are so anchored that before his term began as President of the Christian Coalition of America he resigned because of a critical difference in vision. Dr. Hunter is not a man seeking titles or position; he seeks to use his platform of influence to impact people. Just to have a chance to spend a few minutes with Dr. Hunter was an unexpected gift - we hope you find his insight valuable…

  1. That first bullet point kind of shocked me.

In my mind, I don’t see how follower of Christ could vote Republican.

But people want to be comfortable and think that any political party has the best interests of Christians.
